03 • Install Skylights

Quality work from room to roof.

The Interior

It takes about half a day per skylight to complete the interior portion of the installation, which includes drywall and painting. The type of ceiling in your home — vaulted or flat — will also affect the amount of time it takes to complete the interior portion of the skylight installation.

The Exterior

Depending on circumstances such as roof pitch, interior light shaft depth and shape, and weather, installations can take between half a day and three days. The rooftop portion of the skylight installation includes cutting the hole and fastening the skylight to the roof with the three layers of protection.

04 • Maintain

Register your products and keep them well-maintained.

Registering your skylight gives you access to warranty coverage, helpful updates, and support. And with a few simple maintenance steps, you can ensure your skylight continues to perform at its best for years to come.

    • Natural wood finishes need care every 2–4 years. Clean and recoat with a water-based finish. Avoid getting paint on gaskets.
    • Remove the old finish, clean, prime, and apply water-based paint or varnish. Follow the product directions and cover the gaskets when painting.
    • Use a soft cloth and clean water or mild cleaner. Avoid abrasives, sharp tools, and silicone. Always wet the pane before wiping.
    • Keep gutters and roof areas clear to allow melting snow and ice to drain from skylights during winter.
    • Ventilate 3 to 4 times daily, keep indoor temps above 68°F, and reduce humidity to help prevent condensation on the glass.

Frequently Asked Questions

    • A skylight installation happens in two phases: rooftop and interior. Depending on the circumstances, such as roof pitch, interior light shaft depth and shape, and weather, installations can take between half a day and three days.

In contrast, a single skylight replacement typically takes only a couple of hours. Installers will remove the existing skylight and flashing and replace it with a new one. In some cases, the installer will also do some interior touch-ups, such as repainting and trimming the top of the light well.
    • Skylights are compatible with many roofing types, including asphalt shingles, metal roofs, flat roofs, barrel roof tiles or any other type of high-profile roofing material. To learn which types of skylights are best for the type of roofing material on your home, discuss your options with a VELUX-certified installer.
    • Yes, it is possible to add skylights to a room with a flat ceiling that has unfinished attic space over it. As part of your installation, your installer will construct a drywall light shaft inside to direct daylight from the skylight above to the room below while hiding the attic space between your roof and ceiling.
    • Unless you’re building a new house, you can’t choose which direction the skylight will face. This is because a skylight’s orientation is determined by the direction of the roof.

Typically, west-facing skylights bring in the afternoon sun, south-facing skylights bring in a lot of bright light throughout the day and north-facing skylights provide constant, diffused light.

To find the best spot for a skylight, consider how you use the room and how the addition of a skylight will affect the space.
